Preparing to buy a home? Here’s what you need to know about mortgage advice

Buying a house, whether it’s your first one or not, is likely to be the biggest financial purchase you’ll ever make (and probably the scariest one too!) Therefore, getting mortgage advice is so important, to ensure that everything goes smoothly and nothing is missed.

Here at Forces Family Finance, we love to help our clients by providing them with great advice based on their own personal situation.

Here are our top three mortgage advice tips:

  1. Mortgaging every two years is, luckily, something of the past, as every time you do this you must pay a product fee. It is worth checking with your existing lender if there are any deals that they can offer you, and then call us for independent advice.
  2. Overpayment and offset mortgages can save you lots of interest long term, but often your existing mortgage has facilities already in place. Ask your existing lender if you can make overpayments, how much can you over pay by, when the overpayment is taken into account and consider how the overpayment affects your account. You can then either reduce the term of your mortgage or the amount you owe. After all, a mortgage is the biggest financial commitment you will ever make, it’s important to get it right!
  3. Do you want to move up the property ladder or are you just starting on the first rung? Saving like you have a mortgage not only builds a deposit but also proves to the lender you are capable of borrowing an amount (or a larger amount) and will therefore assist you in getting a mortgage, or a being able to re-mortgage.

If you are a military family, it doesn’t mean that you have to use the Forces Help to Buy Scheme; some families choose not to, as it’s not right for everyone! This is where Forces Family Finance can help you; as we can go through all of the options that are available to you and offer you advice based on your personal circumstances and requirements. As we are qualified mortgage brokers, we can then help to find you the best deal to help you get your foot through the door of your new home!
